After stopping the Ultramarines taking a foothold behind the Ork lines on Black Reach, the Ultramarines had to deploy fully in the Imperial held sector of the planet.
This gave Ferotous and his generals time to prepare their next assault.
The township of Hulthunsar was proving to be a thorn in the Ork invasion. This was a heavily defended town. It had a huge logistical importance to the area. A huge imperial shield generator was stuck in-between the no-mans land between the Ork hordes and the kill zone created by the Ultramarine defence. The important part was the power supply for this generator was still held by the Ultramarines - allowing the shield to function.
The Blood axe boss Komminzar Un'Trogg, leader of the Kommando's on Black Reach had a bold plan. It was tactically sound, even the great Calgar could have seen the level of strategy involved.
The plan had 2 parts. Un'Trogg would let a trusted Nob lead a unit of Kommandos, whilst Admiral Grabba (who was in charge of the air forces and stormboyz) would support the unit by using a mobile force of Deffkoptas, planes and stormboyz. Between the Kommandos and the air support they would destroy the Power generator.
Ferotous thought the plan was far too simple. He decided he would use his resources preparing a huge number of Boyz rather than the specialist troops the Blood Axe bosses suggested. He decided to spearhead a Horde of Boyz and Nobs through the killzone and a small number of Deffkoptas and Kommandos to do the sneaky bits. If the Blood Axes failed, he would just use brute force and crush the Blue Beakies with Orky strength!
Whilst Un'Trogg and Grabba protested saying that more Kommandos and air support would be more useful than throwing ork boyz into the meat grinder, Ferotous would not relent. They knew not to press the issue too far. Afterall the Horde of orks boyz coming from the front would prove a useful distraction to allow them to get the job done.
Ferotous and his generals prepared for battle.
+++++
Calgar was irate at the utter failure of the planetfall mission. He decided he needed to ensure that the next major battle and bolstered the defences outside Hulthunsar. Whilst he did not have the numbers to risk advancing to the Shield generator, he order the defences to be strengthened. Even the huge numbers of the ork horde would struggle to get through the gun line.
As long as the shield remained, he could count on its protection it gave the local area against the Orks long range missiles.
Telion informed Calgar that the Orks were near and preparing a huge assault on the position. Calgar prepared his Gauntlets and made way to battle. Apparently the Ork Warlord himself was to lead the battle. He had a personal mission to end the enemy warlord and halt the WAAAGH! in its tracks.
His forces were ready.

Planetfall - Battle Report
So the first battle was a pitched normal battle and the battlefield was pretty barren. We decided the orks were charging out of the hive city and as the Ultramarines made planetfall to combat the Orks. We spread the 5 objectives nice and fairly.
Edd won the first roll and deployed first. Somewhere in the middle of the game we also decided the winner got to have the first campaign turn and choose the first mission.
Ultramarines Deployment
Edd won the first roll and deployed first. Somewhere in the middle of the game we also decided the winner got to have the first campaign turn and choose the first mission.
Ultramarines Deployment
Won the roll and deployed first. Spread his army. Vehicles
in the middle and then squads on the flanks.
Ork Deployment
Deployed with 2 mobs on boys on one flank and tank bustas,
battlewagon with boss and meganobs on other flank with a unit of 30 boys in the
middle.
Ultramarines Turn 1
Vindicator moved forwards and so did the land raider. Then
massive amounts of missiles. Due to Ork boyz spreading out, the damage was huge
but not too bad. However the unit of boyz in the centre were nearly wiped out
and fled giving first blood to the ultramarines.
Ork Turn 1
The orks moved and ran as fast as possible. The Wagon moved
up the flank. The tankbusters moved but were forced to waste their shooting due
to glory hogs rule on a rhino miles away.
Ultramarines Turn 2
The Vindicator moved back and the razorback
dropped their tactical squad and proceeded to drop their millions of missiles – this time
focusing mainly on the battlewagon and smaller unit of shoota boys. The
lascannons blew up the wagon and the meganobs took fire but their armour kept
them mostly up.
Ork Turn 2
Both Dakka jets came on and the Waaagh! was called. The
meganobs advanced to take on the space marine squads on the flank, whilst the
other boys advanced. The tankbustas eyes lit up with the land raider and
advanced. During shooting the dakka jets went nuts and killed most of the
devastators and nearly killed the predator. The tankbustas damaged the
landraider and got a lucky 10 inch charge on the raider and prompted blew it up
with their tankbusta bombs.
Ultramarines Turn 3
The terminators and the librarian shot and attacked the
tankbustas who got lucky and the nob got lucky as hell as his rokkit managed to
hit the Librarian and instant death him giving the orks slay the warlord. The
Terminators won the assault. Elsewhere the missile launchers of the tactical
squads shot down a dakka jet that then proceded to land on the unit of ork
shootas – managing to fail to wound! The tactical squads in the rhino
sensing the danger of the meganobs started to do a organised retreat.Telion sniped at the warboss and the lascannons shot the
meganobz reducing their numbers. The green tide was thinned with bolter and
missiles as they got close.
Ork Turn 3
The tankbustas rallied and hid in some barricades. The
shoota boys charged the vindicator and the nobz klaw blew the vehicle. The
slugga boys tried but failed to charge the tactical squad. The Meganobs charged
the tactical squad and made a bloody mess of them. The remaining dakkajet, blew
up the land speeder storm.
Ultramarines Turn 4
The rhino picked up a tactical squad and started to advance
to the middle objective. Telion fell back and continued to snipe the meganobs.
The ork warboss died to lascannon and
sniper fire. This created a large killzone between the meganobz and telion and
the lascannons. The Terminators shot and failed to reach the tankbustas in
assault. The tactical squads continued to try and shoot down the remaining
dakkajet but only did 2 hull points. They also thinned the numbers of slugga
and shoota boys even more. The Final Nob of the shoota boys fled.
Orks Turn 4
The Meganobz backed up into a wood to get cover from the
lascannons. They also killed a few scouts with shoota fire. The tankbustas
tried to shot the rhino and missed. The Slugga boys finally made it into combat
and defeated and made the marines flee. The Dakka jet shot some more marines.
Ultramarines Turn 5
We worked out the score. They had the centre objective,
first blood and warlord (5) to the orks 2 Objectives, line breaker and warlord
(8). The Terminators shot the remaining tankbustas and the tactical squad in
the middle shot the fleeing shoota boy Nob. The last two tactical squads tried
to gun down the slugga boy squad, but they didn’t kill enough. The orks passed
the morale check. The lascannons and Telion continued to reduce the meganobz
numbers.
Ork Turn 5
As things stood it was 8-5 to the orks. The Slugga boys
would not survive another round of being fired at and charged the tactical
squad and reduced their numbers. After winning the fight the nob and one ork
boy moved back to claim the objective.
The Dakka jet had to move off the board.
Ultramarines Turn 6
Moved the terminators to claim linebreaker. The lascannons
and the telion thinned the meganobs number down to 1. The meganob passed his
morale test. The Last few tactical squads did an aweful round of shooting and
only did 2 wounds leaving the slugga boy nob alive. However he failed his
morale and fell back. At the end of Ultramarines turn 6 they had First blood, linebreaker, slay the
warlord and an objective 6 against the orks 5 (linebreaker, warlord and an
objective.)
Ork Turn 6
The dakkajet returned back, and the ork slugga nob didn’t rally.
The meganob was holding an objective. The Dakka jet fired like mad at the
tactical squad holding the middle objective and killed all 5!
The game ended.

Planetfall
28.01.956.M41 0537
30.01.956.M41 1652
Jede'ogh was the first planet to report the greenskins. Voldermach and Black Reach followed quickly afterwards.
Within 50 minutes the bulk of the imperial defenses bad fallen. They had destroyed over two thirds of the incoming Ork Roks and Hulks. Imperial records reported over 4000 enemy craft had been successfull shot down. The problem was the third that landed. They could not be stopped, for all the improved defences since the last war.
Voldermach was the weakest of the 3 planets. Communications with it's main settlement, the Capital Hive city of Horijiur ceased at 0857. The planet was lost and a evacuation was attempted.
Jede'ogh held out for 29 hours. By 1100 29.01956.M41 the planet was lost. They managed a successful evacuation of VIP's, resources and specialist to Black Reach.
The Ultramarines announced their incoming support forces were enroute and should arrive within 2 days.
Black Reach still remained in the balance. The southern territories were largely holding back the first wave of Orks. The problem was that the Orks were now landing uncontested in the north of the planet. They were slowly starting to deploy large numbers of specialised Orks and their crude war machines which would overwhelm the defenders.
30.01.956.M41 0834
30.01.956.M41 0834
By the time Calgar and the 4th Company of the Ultramarines had arrived the Orks controlled 65% of the planets landmass. Calgar identified the Hive city of Sturmeir, recently ruined and pillaged by the orks. The ork forces in the area had not been supported with too many supporting vehicles and therefore were a relatively weak target.
The area surrounding the Hive city was of excellent defensive value and if it could be easily fortified and the Orks would have to expend a large resources to retake the city.
Calgar explained the strategy to his Librarian Accurious. The plan was to land in an area of low activity. A sizeable force would be able to land unchallenged, they could then easily goad the Orks in small numbers and weaken the Greenskins. Eventually Calgar knew that the Orks would gather under control of a warboss, and when this happened, Accurious was to take on this force on the outskirts where the space marines ranged weaponry would be most effective.
30.01.956.M41 1652
The planetfall was successful. Accurious and his force landed and started to mop up small pockets of orks. Finally the orks managed to gather a sizeable horde and were being loosely 'controlled' by a Warboss Fangul. A warboss in a huge suit of Mega-armour. Using special teknology komminikator devices that Doktor Ferotous had devised for this campaign, Fangul managed to call in some air support. Two Dakkajets were sent to support Fangul and his horde of Boyz.
The first conflict between the Ultramarines and the Orks in the second war for Black Reach was about to start...
The Campaign System
We have decided to play a system Edd devised. Its broken into 2 turns.
There is a Campaign turn (lasts about 5 minutes!) and a Mission turn which is a full battle.
There is a Campaign turn (lasts about 5 minutes!) and a Mission turn which is a full battle.
We agree on a points list (say 1750) and then prepare an army list each. Before the battle we play a campaign turn.
To start we have a deck of cards with missions on (a pool of approx 9 cards each) which we shuffle and draw 3 from. Each card has one of three mission types (Logistical, Strategic and Tactical). The players who campaign turn it is then selects a mission from his deck and we play the mission as detailed on the card.
Just a few of the examples of missions we have created:
Last stand mission - one side is outnumbered but must defend as long as possible.
Danger Ground - the battlefield is struck by bombardments during the battle.
Danger Ground - the battlefield is struck by bombardments during the battle.
Convoy - escort a vehicle through checkpoints.
City fighting - based on cities of death.
Whoever wins that battle earns the card which will contain a very small reward of some form for the major battle at the end.
Next time we play the other player has his campaign turn and gets to choose a mission from his deck.
The major battle is triggered by one of 3 events.
1) As soon as a player has 3 cards of the same mission type
2) We run out of missions
1) As soon as a player has 3 cards of the same mission type
2) We run out of missions
3) We get bored and both agree
The major battle will be some form or stronghold assault/Escalation super fight - ideally in the 3000-5000 points range. Hopefully there will be an ork stompa!
Finally after the Major battle there is a showdown battle. A small skirmish battle of super bad ass kill teams fighting in an heroic style. Ideally with the two warlords getting their hands dirty in hand to hand! This is inspired by the climax of the original Black Reach, where Captain Cato Sicarius and Zanzag met in combat to decide the outcome of the whole battle.
There is ultimately 4 results possible -
Ultramarine major win - Ultramarines win the Major battle and also the showdown!
Ultramarine minor win - Ultramarines win the Major battle but lose the showdown!
Ork minor win - Orks win the Major battle but lose the showdown!
Ork major win - Orks win the Major battle and also the showdown!
Marneus Augustus Calgar and the 4th Chapter
Edd Quick is playing the part of Ultramarines and will shortly add something here about himself and his love of the Ultramarines....
Marneus Calgar had garrisoned and used Black Reach as a planet to garrison part of his Reserve 8th Company on. Despite over a hundred years passing, Black Reach still has pockets of Orks that have yet to be totally destroyed due to the parasitic nature of the Orks.
Black Reach had considerable defences since the first war, and had a garrison of approximately 5 million Imperial Guard with their support vehicles.
Despite the limited 8th company and the Imperial Guard forces, the Green tide could not be stopped.
Upon hearing the news Calgar, knowing Black Reach was a key defensive system that needed to be kept secure in order to keep Macragge safe, lead his 4th company to rescue the system.

WAAAGH! Dok Ferotous
I (Simon Rooke) will be playing the good guys in this campaign and I am once again going over the top with storyline for my self made Warboss, 'Doktor' Ferotous Bluddietoof. I've played 40k about 2 years (ish.) I've regularly been playing Edd Quick for a while now and we decided we should do some form of Ork against Ultramarine campaign and Black Reach was the obvious choice!
Within the first few months of playing 40k I made a quite decent Biker Boss conversation and in his first game he was obscenely good and was the first warboss I had played with who didn't die in his first battle. That's how my love story with him started. I then created a little bio for him, which then got bigger and bigger as he entered campaigns. its currently running on to 6 pages on word!
By the end of this campaign hopefully he will be the Warboss who finally killed the big daddy, Calgar - Ideally from within a kit bashed stompa!
Below is my ongoing storyline for my warboss and the background for attack on Black Reach.

Thesaurus MA and 'Doktor' Ferotous Bluddietoof (on foot) |
Doktor Ferotous Bluddietoof
A sane medical practitioner would
say that ‘Doktor’ Ferotous Bluddietoof was suffering illusions of grandeur. The
‘Doktor’ claims to be the wisest thing ever. Whilst not having the know how to
fix like a proper painboy, Ferotous claims to have studied and obtained a Phd
in Theology. This is his reason behind the title ‘Doktor’. He claims that he
has bested the emperor himself in tic-tac-toe on 2 separate occasions. Imperial
records refute this. Ferotous has a unhealthy hatred of Ghaghkull Thraka and
will never ally with Goff Orks as he believes them to be unholy and un orky.
He is followed by his pet grot
who is the only intelligent greenskin who even compares to Ferotous’ mighty
intellect. The grot is known as Thesaurus MA, who for a grot is quite brave, however
it’s quite easy to be brave whilst riding a warbike with a 400 pound Ork
Warboss for protection.
Early Life
Ferotous Bluddietoof was a whelp
in a kult of speed, he knew how to fix’ up minor things and struggled to keep
his mouth quiet. He was one day proclaiming his greatness, and a nob had
enough. With any fight in the klan, a great number of orks gathered to watch.
It promised to be a short bloody fight. Ferotous started to taunt the Nob,
claiming that his slugga was as weak as a grot blasta and that his ‘eavy armour
was as weak as an humie flesh. The nob, keen to disprove this, turned his
slugga on himself, aiming for his ‘eavy armour to show how tough it was.
Unfortunately the slugga shell went straight through wounding the nob. Upon the
shell hitting, Ferotous swung his choppa into the skull and won the duel,
promoting him into nobility of orks.
Ferotous went on to lead the Nob
Bikers and stories of this wise ork quickly span out of control, and Ferotous
made larger and dafter claims. Around this time, an equally bold and
cocky grot going by the name Thesaurus claimed he had studied up to master’s
level and he was useful with a wrench.
Between the two of them they
worked on cyborknetics and bikes and rose through the ranks of the Warband,
ultimately becoming warboss thanks to impressive feat of strength, enhanced by
their combined mechanical skill of Ferotous and cyborknetics talents of
Thesaurus (now with MA added to his name.)
Early Victories
Before Ferotous first major
campaign, his kult of speed Waaagh! Had no plan, they simply wondered space
until they caused enough mayhem that some force reacted. Ferotous quickly
favoured hordes of bikes and red painted vehicles, often with the grots of the
WAAAGH! joining in using Grot Tanks and Kans
His kult of speed managed to
inflict heavy wounds on a Eldar craftworld planetary force, Ferotous himself
managing to defeat a mighty Wraightknight in close combat. In another
engagement, he routed a Blood Angels force and Ferotous and his Nobz managed to
best the Sanguinary Guard and the Chapter master of the 4th Blood Angels
Chapter in combat. Other feats included being tougher than a Rotten
Nurgle Space Marine company.
Auctorian Sector
The Auctorian sector is a
planetary system, home to once wealthy and prosperous imperial settlements and
forges worlds created during the great imperial crusade. Eons passed and the
sector became ripe with corruption and weakened. The agents of Chaos worked to
gain control.
The Chaos lord of the Iron
Warriors, Nausghtual, worked to gather agents within the Imperium of the
Auctorian Sector, a small group of Dark Eldar and the support of two Ork
warboss’, Ghazghkull Thrakka, who had recently left the conflict that came to
be known as the First war of Armageddon, and a new upstart warboss, ‘Doktor’
Ferotous Bluddietoof, who’s kult of speed WAAAGH! was gathering momentum.
Early Auctorian Sector Victories and destruction of Atlas Victory
(“Da Red World”)
The conflict was a
marginal success for the forces of Chaos, but it was a total success as far as
both warbosses were concerned. Unknown to Ferotous, Ghazghkull was using the
whole campaign as a way to prepare for his next war on Armageddon. His
meks had devised a machine called da teleporta.
The two warlords were constantly
fightin’ for superiority. Ultimately Ferotous’ Waaagh! Launched wave after wave
attacking the densely populated planet, Atlas Victory. Ferotous conquered the
imperial planet and ordered every building to be painted red – to make it
stand out against Ghazghkull’s black and white Goffs colouring. The
Doktor then renamed the planet “Da Red World”
Meanwhile Ghazghkull managed to
perfect his teleportaz and managed to attack strategically to help assist all
the forces of Chaos. When the moment came to attack one of the central planets,
the two combined ork WAAAGHS! and The Iron Warrior chaos space marines launched
an attack on planet fortress and home world of the Space Marine second founding
chapter, The Dawn of Silver.
The Kunnin’ Betrayal of Ghazghkull
After goading by Ghazghkull’s,
Ferotous was tricked into spearheading the attack on the Space marine fortress
planet. Ghazghkull let Ferotous and his boyz make use of his teleportaz
to deep strike right into the heart of the city.
Having tested his teleportaz
teleporting thousands of Boyz and Vehicles into the heart of a city, without
any major mishaps, he concluded that he had enough experience using his
teleportaz. Mid-battle, Ghazghkull abandoned Ferotous and the Iron Warriors.
Ghazghkull, the kunnin’ git he is, had achieved his aims and wanted a powerful
Warboss, Ferotous, to die in the attack.
Ferotous and the Iron Warriors
were left currently trapped on the surface, outnumbered, outgunned and
betrayed. Ferotous, still to this day holds a grudge against Ghazghkull and
challenges his orky-ness as he didn’t want to join in the battle, despite
having a Stompa! For this reason Ferotous will not ally with Ghazghkull again
and has a righteous hatred of him and the Goff Klan.
The Destruction of The Dawn of Silver
Against the odds, Da Dok’s WAAAGH! was not killed as planned by the defences. Ferotous and his kult of speed
penetrated far into the capital city, destroying squadrons of imperial tanks
and space marines. The ‘Doktor’ personally commanded a unit of Nobz to destroy
the Titan class Baneblade tank with the use of their mighty power klaws.
The fighting focused around the
gene seed vault of the Dawn of Silver. After a thunderhawk gunship was gunned
down by obliterators, a handful of first company terminators and Chapter Master
Omino Calistarius emerged from the wreckage. Ferotous and his Nob bikers
charged the first company where ‘Doktor’ Ferotous Bludditoof and Chapter Master, Omino
Calistarius, engaged in a challenge. The duel continued for an hour with both
combatants not giving an inch. Klaw crashing on Power shield and Power maul
unable to damage the Cyborknetics within Ferotous.
For reasons unknown at the time,
Omino fled the challenge without cause and ordered a retreat. Ferotous,
believing this was his victory, ordered his WAAAGH! to grab as much loot, dakka
and scrap and then leave. This was a good scrap and he wanted to come back
after the imperials had rebuilt for a second round!
It turned out the reason for the
sudden retreat by the Omino and the Dawn of Silver, was that Ferotous had
diverted the attention of the imperial defence. This had allowed the Iron
Warriors to break through to their primary objective – the gene seed vault.
With the gene seed under Chaos control, the Dawn of Silver had no option but to
relocate all sources to deal with the traitor marines..
With Ferotous and his WAAAGH! In
orbit, the city was suddenly ripped apart by cataclysmic explosions. The
Dawn of Silver detonated the charges within the gene seed vault to ensure they
could not be tainted by Chaos. This act ultimately destroyed the future of the
chapter but it did take out all remnants of Chaos on the planet.
Ferotous still proclaims that in
this campaign was a total victory. The ‘Dok’ had out-orkified Ghazghkull and
stomped 2 planets flat.
The Battle for Vordrast
Ferotous, still enraged by Ghazghkull's treachery, wanted to make a name for himself. Ferotous spent a campaign on the planet of Vordrast where he continued to mastery control his speed obsessed army. He knew that Ghazghkull was causing mayhem because he looked to the other klans, namely the Bad Moons for allies to vary his armies tactical options.
Ferotous looked to do the same. He met two native bosses on Vordrast. Admiral Grabba, a skilled stormboy boss who controlled a mighty his jet fleet. There was a Komminzar Un'Trogg, a sneeky Kommando who excelled in ambushing. These Blood Axe Bosses also explained the concept of taktiks to Ferotous.
News of Zanzag's failed WAAAGH! against the Ultramarines had spread. Ferotous had worked out that the Hammer of Dawn was a gene seed offshooted from the Ultramarines. So if the Hammer of Dawn were a good fight, the people they came from would be too. With his newly found allies Ferotous was ready for his next phase of his plan.
Black Reach - Reclaimed
Ferotous set a course to Black Reach, taking many detours to tactically sound planets with useful resources. This ensured the lads were kept entertained and they gathered stockpiles of scrap and ammo. It had been over a hundred years since Black Reach had been tested. Ferotous' plan was simple. He wanted to show that Goff klan wer weedy.
If he could destroy Black Reach and control the asteroid field, he would be able to produce thousands of Roks to launch the next phase of his war and make another red planet, spitting in the face of the Ultramarines.
He would be the single biggest threat to the Space Marines.
The green tide descended on Black Reach...
